Islamic SHS Disturbances update by The Ghana Police

The update was sighted by icreategh.com on Twitter and on Facebook on the official twitter page of the Ghana Police Service with a press released dated June 13th, 2022. The released has been signed by the Chief Superintendent of Police Director, Public Affairs, Grace Ansah-Akrofi and listed some updates on the activities of the Ghana Police so far.

Following the Islamic SHS disturbances update, it is understood that the Deputy Regional Commander and some two other Senior Officers were removed and interdicted respectively.

As stated in the released, “The inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare led a team from the Police Headquarters to Kumasi immediately following the disturbances at the Islamic SHS”. It is understood that some students were admitted at the Suntreso Government Hospital, Kwadaso Hospital and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for medical attention as some officers who also sustained some of injury and were on admission at the Police Clinic were visited by the IGP.

The press released further mentioned that all students and police officers on admission at the various hospitals receiving treatment were all discharged.

“Police investigations have so far established that as at Monday, June 13th, 2022, some students of the Islamic Senior High School, Abrepo, Kumasi, took to the streets and blocked sections of the road to demonstrate against frequent motor traffic accidents in front of their school”.

In response to disperse the students to allow traffic flow, the police used pepper spray, fired warning shots to disperse the students who were pelting stones at them.

The conduct by the Police was stated to be poor and fall short of the standard operating procedure on crowd control.

“In line with this, the Deputy Regional Police Commander, DCOP/Mr. Kwasi Akomeah-Apreku, who was acting as the Regional Commander has been removed from his position and has been interdicted accompanied by ACP/ Mr. George Ankomeah, the Regional Operations Officer and ACP/Mr. Alex Cudjoe Acquah,the Suame Divisional Police Commander have also been interdicted to make way for a thorough investigation into the incident” as mentioned in the report.

“The Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) has commenced a full-scale investigation into the conduct of the officers who were responsible for the Police response”.

Our sources have it that Clinical psychologist have been deployed into the school to offer psychological support to the student body.

Calm has been restored in the school as the students continue their examination preparations.

We at icreategh are calling on the Police force to protect the lives they’ve sworn to protect but not to harm them and also, we are appealing to the public to reframe from throwing objects at the Police so they can discharge their duties.
