Teachers to Join Demo Against 15% VAT on Electricity Consumption.

Following the recent public outcry by Ghanaians on the killer taxes that is making life unbearable, Ghanaians were in high hopes that 2024 is going to be a promising year and as such, their woes and struggles will come to an end. Well, that was a mirage as more taxes greeted them few months into the new year.

A 15% VAT has been introduced on Electricity following the numerous increases experienced last year. Organised Labour has strongly kicked against the 15% tax stating that Ghanaians are already burden with taxes. Several calls according to organised labour has been made for the outright withdrawal of the 15% VAT on electricity consumption but the government has been adamant. In line with this, organised labour deem it appropriate to demonstrate to send a message to the government on how prepared they are to resist the tax. Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) been a prominent member of organised labour, agreed to the decision and calling on all members of GNAT to join the upcoming demonstration.

Following a letter signed by Isaac Baah, Head of Compensation & Benefits, sighted by icreategh team, it is clear that GNAT is ready to fight for the better good. “Following a meeting held on Friday, 2nd February, 2024 at the Trade Union Hall in Accra, Leadership of Organised Labour decided to embark on a nationwide demonstration against government’s directive to ECG and NEDCo to start the implementation of 15% VAT on residential consumption of electricity” as stated in the letter.

The letter further stated that “GNAT as a prominent member of Organised Labour participated and agreed to the decision at the meeting to embark on a nationwide demonstration against the imposition of this insensitive tax. ”

“We are by this letter directing all our Regional Secretariats to join Organised Labour in their respective Regions in preparation towards this mammoth demonstration scheduled for Tuesday, 13th February, 2024 at all Regional capitals.”
