TEWU : CHASS Members Intimidating Non-Teaching Staffs Must Stop

TEWU : CHASS Members Intimidating TEWU Members Must Stop

Following the strike action declared by the four Pre-tertiary teacher unions on Monday 4th July, 2022, the Non-Teaching staffs have been intimidated by CHASS which is making it difficult for them to join in the strike action.

In a letter released by the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union of TUC (GH), they expressed their disappointment in the attitude of CHASS members towards their members. The letter was released yesterday 7th of July, 2022 and signed by Mark Dankyira Korankye, the general secretary.

“It would be recalled that last Monday, 4th July 2022, the four (4) Unions in Education, namely Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) (GH) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana, in a Press Conference, withdrew our services in all the Pre-Tertiary education space, to back our demand for the Cost-Living-Allowance (COLA). This involved both Teaching and Non-Teaching staff” as stated in the released.

The letter further stated how some CHASS members intimidate their members, “It is sad to note this, information reaching us is that some members of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), are intimidating our members, the non-teaching staff, especially the kitchen staff and forcing them to remain at work. We find the actions of these CHASS members as very unfortunate, to say the least”.

“We, in the leadership of the Union, do want to have any confrontations with anybody as far as this Industrial Action is concerned. No teacher is being forced and threatened to remain in the classroom so we do not see why the non-teaching staff are being treated this way,” as they cautioned CHASS members.

They called on Director General to call these heads to order, as stated in the released, “We are by this medium, requesting the Director-General of GES to call these Heads to order and asked them to refrain from the threats and intimidations as we all seek the appropriate response from Government on our request.”

He assured TEWU members of the full barking of the Union. And it reads, “We are by this medium also telling ALL the Non-Teaching staff to withdraw all services and stay at home until you hear from us, your leaders”.
